Commissioned by Federation Square, the MONOLITHICA public sonic art intervention is a project comprising of 8 events that have been designed to showcase the talent of sound makers of varying abilities. The project explores notions of public ritual and gathering as acts of community celebration as is typified by the Stone Henge-like speaker Sculptures that frame the outdoor performances in the Upper Square of Federation Square. The notion of outdoor sonic gathering is juxtaposed against four indoor concerts in BMW Edge, highlighting the view that concert culture is a descendant of ancient public rituals. Projects feature the Amplified Elephants (musicians with an intellectual disability), the Noise Scavengers (teen sound artists from Corio) and some of Melbourne’s finest professional sonic adventurers.
