THE MOUNTAIN REVIEW

The Mountain (2010) (review excerpt)

At fortyfivedownstairs, performed by The Amplified Elephants, Noise Scavengers and BOLT with sound machines. Presented by JOLT and the Foostcray Community Arts Centre.

"The Mountain takes the idea of found sound in an entirely new direction. As well as turning unexpected objects into musical instruments, this work also finds unexpected performers. Just as found sounds are inherently intriguing, the manner in which musicians discover and engage with sound yields its own intrigue and idiosyncracies. The risks in this work, taken for the sake of artistic ideals, have paid off with success. The Mountain Concerts have realised the ideal of social equality in performance and not merely as the spectre of possibility." Simon Charles, Realtime Magazine February 2011.

THE DESERT REVIEW

OBJECTS INSPIRE NORTHERN KIDS IN SONIC ADVENTURE

Mainstream music was thrown out the window at The Valley Mill on Saturday.

Talented young musicians from Geelong’s northern suburbs showcased some of their own creations in a sonic adventure titled The Desert.

Using traditional and more obscure instruments and teaming up with a group of professional musicians, the concert was designed to open ears to sounds made a little differently.

Cloverdale Community Centre manager Sue Hartigan said the young musicians used household items such a satay sticks to make music.

“They used regular instruments, but they also used some different things like dust pans and water bottles to make different sounds,” she said.

“Pretty much they could use anything that can make sound. They performed six new works held together with a narrative about the desert.

They had put a lot of time into it and we got some really good feedback from the concert.”

Ms Hartigan said the group’s time with acclaimed sound artists James Hullick was truly unique.

“They are really learning so much. It is opening so many doors for them. This is great for these kids to be able to learn music because it is not really offered in many schools.

“To learn music from quality musicians really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
