The Desert was presented in a recently sold mill in Geelong and as such provided a compelling industrial backdrop to the project. Sonically the experience presented as a marriage between professional (BOLT) and developing (NOISE SCAVENGERS) sound makers. Not having a wealth of resources, the NOISE SCAVENGERS, under the guidance of James Hullick, have been encouraged to be resourceful in developing the means to make sound. Wonderful sounds can come from all manner of objects in our urban landscapes and from within our daily lives, and so, with this abundance of sound making opportunities, the sound artist need not lament not owning fancy equipment and instruments. The NOISE SCAVENGERS are lateral and creative thinkers and their dynamic and immediate sound making methods have put the pressure on the BOLT Ensemble to think more inventively about the music making process.

The title The Desert refers to the experience of many young people living in urban infrastructures – which is that the urban landscape can be like a desert, devoid of means for social engagement and cultural growth. But even some flowers grow in deserts – and so the secret to better living in the urban desert might be to look and listen more closely to the terrain, to the people passing through it, and to discover some of the magic that can lie within the urban experience.

A special thanks should be sent out to Sue Hartigan, manager of the Cloverdale Community Centre, who initiated the Noise Scavengers project with James Hullick, as part of Cloverdale’s ‘In the Zone’ arts programs for Geelong youth.
